Lunar New Year Traditions

Lunar New Year falls on February 16th, 2018 this year and it is the year of the dog. This is an important time for Asian families because it’s all about gathering together and celebrating family. No matter where people are, they try their best to return home and reunite with their family.

The most important tradition is the New Year’s Eve dinner. It’s when all the family members gather together to have a big feast filled with delicious eats. They come together to commemorate the past year and look forward to the new year. The most important dishes are dumplings, fish, and longevity noodles. It’s important for the noodles to be uncut and made as long as possible because long noodles represent longevity and long life. In my family, we fold and make dumplings by hand so they are super fresh.

The best part about Lunar New Year for the kids? The red envelopes, of course! Instead of receiving wrapped gifts, children get red envelopes stuffed with lucky money from their elders.

I enjoy celebrating many of the Lunar New Year traditions but cleaning is my least favourite tradition. Nonetheless, it’s important to thoroughly clean the entire house prior to the new year. This is done to get rid of bad spirits and feelings. Failing to do so may bring bad luck and nobody would want that!

Some other key traditions include buying new clothes and wearing red. Why is wearing red so important? Red symbolizes happiness, wealth, and prosperity. It can also ward off evil spirits and bring good luck for the new year. This has got to be my favourite tradition because it involves shopping! My go to place to shop for a new outfit is CF Fairview Mall. There are so many stores under one roof, which allows me to shop for an entirely new outfit for Lunar New Year. This year, I went to CF Fairview Mall and picked out my festive LNY outfit. Since it is the year of the dog, I saw this fuzzy coat at Zara and just had to buy it because it reminds me of a poodle! It is the perfect coat for keeping warm and cozy during the new year. In addition to buying new clothes, it’s important to buy something red to improve your luck and prosperity for the new year. I paired the fuzzy brown coat with a burgundy red turtleneck (Zara) and red over the knee boots (Zara). I absolutely adore turtlenecks for the winter because they keep my neck super warm. These over the knee boots are the perfect shoes to complete this outfit. Not only do they elongate your legs, they are also a great statement piece. You can find all of these pieces at CF Fairview Mall!

To celebrate Lunar New Year, CF Fairview Mall is holding a Lunar New Year celebration on February 17th, starting at 2pm in Lower Level Court. There will be lion dancing, red envelopes, and more! I’ll be there to catch all of the action. Come along and celebrate with me!
